Harrison Schley, Ph.D., is a member of the International Society of Appraisers with a doctorate in Japanese history and art from the University of Pennsylvania. He has been a Fulbright Scholar in Japan and a Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution. Dr. Schley has worked with museum collections across the United States and Japan, including the National Museum of Asian Art at the Smithsonian and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He has also served as a professor of Japanese history and art at both Fordham University and Kyushu University. As an appraiser, Dr. Schley specializes in Japanese art and Judaica.
As an appraiser, researcher, and scholar, Dr. Schley understands that specialization in the art market or in art history comes after years of research and study. Not all appraisers are equal in their expertise and not all appraisers are specialists. To find the most appropriate appraisers for our client’s needs Dr. Schley works with a network of appraisers as well as scholars from academic institutions and museums to identify consultants who are qualified to work with high value, rare, and unique objects. Contracted appraisers are typically members of the International Society of Appraisers, the American Society of Appraisers, or the Appraisers Association of America. Our firm reviews the work of our contracted appraisers to ensure it meets our standards and closely adheres to the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).
