Harrison Schley, Ph.D, is a member of the International Society of Appraisers, and has over a decade of experience working with collections of Asian art collections at institutions in the United States and Japan.

The Appraisal Foundation is the Congressionally authorized authority on valuation standards in the United States and is internationally recognized for its leadership in the field. It establishes the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), which serve as the benchmark for ethical, competent, and defensible appraisals.

Dr. Schley is trained, tested and in compliance with the qualifying and continuing education requirements of the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).

Independent Research

In addition to his appraisal work, Dr. Schley is an independent scholar of Asian Art. His doctoral thesis, “Makers and the Art Market: Marketing and the Aesthetics of Edo period Ceramics,” explores the role of merchants and marketing in the development of ceramics aesthetics during Japan’s Edo period (1615-1868). Other research interests include the history of cataloging and canonizing art in Japan and elsewhere, the history of foreigner communities in Japan during the 15th through 19th centuries, and the history and material culture of early Jewish communities in Japan and East Asia.
